Tanya Beckett

Broadcaster, Public speaker, Communications Advisor – Moderator

Tanya Beckett has worked in broadcasting and the media for over 20 years. She started out at the FT, then went to work for CNBC, Sky News, CNN and since 1998, the BBC.

She has worked on a variety of programmes on BBC World News, the BBC News Channel, Radio 4 and BBC1 and BBC2 including The Inquiry, Our World, Working Lunch, Today, Newsnight and World Business Report. She also spent three years living in and reporting from New York for the BBC.

Tanya also works with the World Bank, Chatham House, the Somali Government and the British Foreign Office in matters relating to trade and communication. She is currently writing and presenting BBC current affairs radio documentary The Inquiry. Tanya has a degree from Oxford University in Metallurgy and Materials Science and spent five years as an investment banker in Frankfurt and London.

Prof. Dr. Stéphane Pallage

Rector of the University of Luxembourg

Stéphane Pallage is the rector of the University of Luxembourg since January 2018 and full professor in Economics. He is responsible for developing the overall University strategy and institutional policies. Stéphane Pallage is also vice-president of the University of the Greater Region.

He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. Before joining the University of Luxembourg, he was a professor in economics at the University of Quebec in Montréal (UQAM). He worked extensively on applied macroeconomics, dynamic general equilibrium models, international aid, and the fight against child labor. From 2013 to 2017, Stéphane was also the Dean of the School of Management at UQAM, which has 15,000 students and nearly 100,000 alumni worldwide.

Taina Bofferding

Minister of Equality between Women and Men

Minister for Home Affairs

Taina Bofferding was born on 22 November 1982 in Esch-sur-Alzette. She graduated in social sciences in 2011 at the University of Trier. Following the legislative elections of 14 October 2018, Taina Bofferding joined the government as Minister for Home Affairs and as Minister of Equality of between Women and Men on 5 December 2018 in the coalition government formed by the Democratic Party (DP), the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) and the Green Party (déi gréng).

Taina Bofferding was elected to the Chamber of Deputies following the legislative elections of 2013. She was then a member of several committees including the Committee on Institutions and Constitutional Review, the Committee on Culture, the Committee on Higher Education, Research, Media, Communications and Space, the Committee for Family and Integration, the Housing Committee and the Committee on Labor, Employment and Social Security.

At local level, Taina Bofferding was municipal councilor in the city of Esch-sur-Alzette from 2011 to 2018. 

Her Royal Highness Grand Duchess of Luxembourg Maria Teresa

Her Royal Highness Grand Duchess of Luxembourg Maria Teresa is the distinguished speaker of the Gender and the Pandemic workshop. Her Royal Highness has been a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO since 1997 for her efforts to expand education for young girls and women and help fight poverty. She is the President of the Luxembourg Red Cross. The Grand Duchess is particularly affected by the trauma, isolation and stigmatisation of women and girls who had been victims of sexual violence in fragile environments and commits herself to their cause from 2014 onwards.

After doing extensive research on the subject, she met with survivors. In 2016, Her Royal Highness met with the winners of the Sakharov Prize, Nadia Murad (Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2018) and Lamiya Aji Bachar, two young Iraqi women from the Yezidi community, who have become symbols for all the victims of violence from the so-called Islamic State and spokespersons of their community.

In 2019, HRH founded the “Stand Speak Rise Up!” conference and association that is committed to ending sexual violence in fragile environments.

Prof.  Andrew Steptoe

Andrew Steptoe is professor of psychology and epidemiology at University College London, where he is Head of the Department of Behavioural Science and Health, and director of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). He graduated in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford. He was head of the Department of Psychology and Chair of the Academic Board at St. George’s Hospital Medical School before moving to University College London in 2000, where he was British Heart Foundation Professor of Psychology (2000-2016) and Director of the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care (2011-2017). He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal Society of Biology, and the Academy for Social Sciences. Dr Steptoe’s research is primarily focused on links between psychological and social processes and physical health, and on population aging. He is author or editor of 22 books and around 940 journal articles and chapters.

Prof. Graziella Bertocchi

Graziella Bertocchi is Professor of Economics at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and President of the Einaudi Institute for Economics and Finance. She received her PhD in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and held positions at Brown University, Royal Holloway-University of London, Université Catholique de Louvain, European University Institute, and IGIER-Bocconi. She is a Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research and IZA. Her research interests include macroeconomics, political economy, comparative development, and the economics of growth, culture, and institutions.

Prof. Claus Vögele

Claus Vögele is professor of clinical and health psychology at the University of Luxembourg, where he is Head of the Department of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences, and director of the Master programme in Psychotherapy. He graduated in Psychology from Landau University, completed his doctorate at the University of Hamburg, and obtained his habilitation at the University of Marburg. Over the last 30 years he has held academic posts at both German and British Universities before joining the University of Luxembourg in February 2010. He is reviewer for numerous research funding organisations, and appointed member of a reviewer college. He is chief-editor of one international and one national journal, and editorial board member of several international and national journals. He is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (UK), past Chair of the Division of Health Psychology (German Psychological Society) and past President of the German Society for Behavioural Medicine. A chartered Clinical and Health Psychologist (BPS, Health and Care Professions Council) and registered practice supervisor (BPS) he has been practising for the last 25 years and has held a senior position in the National Health Service (UK).

Dr. Mayada El-Zoghbi

A 20-year veteran and leader in financial inclusion, Mayada El-Zoghbi became the Managing Director of the Center for Financial Inclusion (CFI) in September 2019. She leads the vision and strategy for CFI, building on its strong foundation of innovative, industry-shaping work.

Mayada’s experience includes serving as lead for strategy, research and development for CGAP. In that role, she led CGAP’s strategy development and its research on women’s financial inclusion, financial services in crisis environments, and other emerging topics. Prior to this, she managed CGAP’s work with the donor and investor community based in Paris, France.

She has also led numerous technical assistance, evaluation, and research assignments, served as a research director for a USAID initiative, and lectured at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs. Mayada started her career working with several non-profit organizations establishing inclusive financial institutions in the Palestinian Territories, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Kosovo.

Prof Skerdilajda Zanaj

Skerdilajda Zanaj is a Full Professor of Economics at the University of Luxembourg. Her research interests include microeconomics, public and international economics, and the economics of culture and migration. Prior joining the University of Luxembourg, she was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Université Catholique de Louvain.

Since 2019, she is the gender equality officer of the University of Luxembourg. Her work has led the University to reach the milestone of validating a Gender Equality Policy in May 2021. She is a promoter and advocate of gender equality because a gender diverse research team enhances research’s scientific quality and social relevance.

Skerdi is the chairwoman of the ZONTA Jane Klausman Awards for Luxembourg.

Prof. Conchita D’Ambrosio

Conchita D’Ambrosio is Professor of Economics, FNR PEARL Chair on socio-economic inequalities, at Université du Luxembourg. She is an economist, with a Ph.D. from New York University (2000). Her research interests have revolved around the study of individual and social well-being, its determinants, and the proposal of various measures that are able to capture its different aspects. Before joining the University of Luxembourg in 2013, she was Associate Professor of Economics at the Università di Milano-Bicocca.

She is chief editor of the Review of Income and Wealth since 2007. She joined the editorial board of the Journal of Economic Inequality in 2013. She has published in several academic journals and she is the editor of the Handbook of Research on Economic and Social Well-Being published by Edward Elgar in 2018.

Since 2019 she is a member of the Scientific Council of the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, and of the Fondazione Luigi Einaudi in Turin. She is Research Fellow of the Deutsche Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (DIW) Berlin since 2015. Since 2013 she is Luxembourg Income Study Senior Scholar and Fellow of the Dondena Centre on Social Dynamics and Public Policy of Università Bocconi in Milan.
